About The Wine

This McLaren Vale Old Vine Chardonnay 2015 is from 60 year old vines with fresh and crisp aromas of apple followed by a complex palate of smooth honey and butterscotch. A well balanced easy to drink Chardonnay which has spent 10 months in French Oak.

Comments from Wine Buyer Steve:

This is a stunning McLaren Vale 2015 Chardonnay from some of the oldest vines in the region. It is fresh and crisp with a nice subtle oak texture and heaps of tropical peach on the palate. If you like a Chardy that is not overpowered by oak but has that mouth creaminess, then this is for you and this wine will get better over the next 3-4 years. This is exceptional value at $13.00 per bottle as the winery sells it under brand at $26.00 per bottle.

My Score 90/100 WACC Silver Medal.

About The Producer:

The producer of this 2015 Old Vine McLaren Vale Chardonnay is one of Australia’s oldest wineries established in 1925. In 1925, a 25 year old Giovanni boarded a ship at the port of Genoa and left his Piedmontese village of CarrĂº Italy for a brighter future. Despite the heartache of leaving his large, winemaking family he felt compelled to embark on the risky yet exciting voyage. He believed he was on his way to America to meet his sister. Instead, he landed in Port Adelaide, Australia.

Giovanni was quickly struck by the colony’s lack of fine table wine and the dominance of beer in Australian society. He observed the abundance of sunshine and fertile soils south of Adelaide and immediately noted the land’s suitability for quality wine production. Just one year later, Giovanni (whose name had quickly changed to the more Australian ‘John’) was leasing vineyards in the Brighton District, 15km south of Adelaide city, and making wine for the ‘new Australians.’ By the early 1930’s Giovanni had built a winery with his best friend, Cristiano (Jimmy) and by the late 1940’s, he owned a number of vineyards surrounding the winery. They began trading to customers in Adelaide and Melbourne. Until 1947, Giovanni (John) & Cristiano (Jimmy) ran a winery electricity-free – no mean feat.

Giovanni’s sons Geoff & John are directors and still work at the winery. Eldest son Peter is a now retired but remains a vital board member. Giovanni’s daughter Ines is the Managing Director and his grandson James is one of two winemakers. James is a passionate winemaker and continues to heighten the status of the premium range of wines through dedication, experimentation and commitment to small-batch, quality winemaking.

James Halliday has consistently rated this producer 5 Stars.
